Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning in Oxford and Lafayette County

Fire officials in Oxford and Lafayette County are warning residents to avoid outdoor burning today. The National Weather Service has issued a fire danger alert, citing elevated risk from late morning through the afternoon.

Although it rained Friday night and the ground may appear wet, officials say conditions can still allow fires to spread quickly, especially in dry grass, leaves, and brush. The warning applies even to those planning to burn tree debris, as authorities strongly discourage outdoor fires today.

Officials highlight that fires are more likely to start easily and spread rapidly under current conditions. Wind and low humidity levels can cause small fires to escalate quickly, posing a significant risk to the community.

Residents are urged to take precautions, such as avoiding burn piles, securing trailer chains to prevent sparks, properly disposing of cigarettes, and keeping vehicles and equipment off dry grass. Those grilling are advised to keep grills attended and away from vegetation.

Fire departments ask anyone who sees smoke or an unattended fire to call 911 immediately. Early reporting can help contain fires before they spread. Authorities encourage residents to share this information to help keep the community safe.
