Karleen Gardner Returns to Ole Miss as New UM Museum Director

OXFORD, Miss. – Karleen Gardner, a University of Mississippi alumna whose museum career began with a student tour guide role in 1997, has returned to her alma mater as the new director of the University of Mississippi Museum and Historic Houses.

Gardner steps into the role following the retirement of longtime director Robert Saarnio. A native of Laurel, she holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art history from Ole Miss and credits the university for sparking her passion for museums and art education.

“It all started here,” Gardner said, reflecting on her time as an intern at what was then the Marie Buie Museum. “Connecting people to art during that internship showed me exactly what I wanted to do with my life.”

Gardner brings a wealth of national and international experience to the position. She previously served as the director of learning and engagement at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and as director of learning innovation at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, where she also led its Center for Empathy and the Visual Arts. Her advocacy for accessibility and empathy in museums has been recognized globally through her publications and presentations across the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

Now back in Mississippi, Gardner says her focus will be on making the UM Museum a hub for both the campus and broader community.

“I want this to be a museum that people come to, but also one that reaches out,” she said. “Museums must evolve to stay relevant – they need to reflect and engage with people from all backgrounds.”

Gardner plans to expand student engagement by collaborating with faculty to develop multidisciplinary courses, programs, and exhibits that encourage critical thinking and creativity. Her goal is to not only bring more students into the museum, but also embed the museum into the fabric of their academic experience.

“I’m passionate about creating opportunities for students to discover their strengths and envision their futures – just like I did here,” Gardner said.

With a strong emphasis on inclusivity, education, and community outreach, Gardner’s return marks a new chapter for the University Museum – one rooted in connection, curiosity, and transformation.
