Lafayette County Confirms Second Death Linked to Winter Storm
LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Miss. — Lafayette County Emergency Management has confirmed a second death related to the ongoing winter storm in the area.
The Baptist Memorial Hospital Emergency Department received an unresponsive patient this morning. Despite attempts at life-saving measures, the individual was pronounced dead. The county medical examiner attributed the death to cardiac arrest caused by hypothermia.
A household member reported that the home had a wood-burning heat source. Authorities have not released the victim’s name pending family notification, according to Lafayette County officials.
Steve Quarles, director of Lafayette County Emergency Management, expressed sympathy and urged residents to take precautions. “Our hearts are with this family and all those affected by this storm,” he said. “Cold exposure can become life-threatening quickly. Please stay warm, limit time outside, and check on neighbors, especially older adults and those without reliable heat. If you believe someone is suffering from hypothermia, call 911 immediately.”
Officials also advised residents who cannot stay warm to seek shelter, which provides food, water, and sleeping arrangements. Those unable to reach a shelter can call 662-234-8789 for assistance.
