Lafayette County confirms second winter storm-related death

Lafayette County Emergency Management has confirmed a second death related to the ongoing winter storm in Lafayette County, Mississippi. The incident involved a resident who was found unresponsive at home and later pronounced dead at Baptist Memorial Hospital Emergency Department.

The cause of death was determined to be cardiac arrest due to hypothermia, according to authorities. A household member indicated the home had a wood-burning heat source, but details about the individual’s identity have not been released pending family notification.

Steve Quarles, director of Lafayette County Emergency Management, expressed concern over the incident. “Our hearts are with this family and all those affected by this storm,” he said. “Cold exposure can become life-threatening quickly. Please take this seriously—stay warm, limit time outside, and check on neighbors, especially older adults and those without reliable heat.”

He urged residents to call 911 immediately if they suspect someone is suffering from hypothermia. Officials also recommend visiting a shelter if staying warm at home is not possible.
