Lafayette County lauds school district for storm shelter efforts during ice storm Fern

Lafayette County officials expressed gratitude to the Lafayette County School District for its assistance during ice storm Fern. Superintendent Jay Foster and district employees opened Lafayette Elementary School as a storm shelter, offering a safe and warm space for residents in need, according to a statement from the county.

County leaders commended the cafeteria team and staff for their professionalism and dedication. They served meals to shelter residents and first responders working long hours to maintain safety. The support was crucial to the community’s storm response efforts, officials said.

Board President Brent Larson praised the partnership, saying, “In moments like this, Lafayette County is at its best when our community partners work side by side. Superintendent Foster and the Lafayette County School District demonstrated real leadership and compassion by opening their doors and standing with our residents and responders.”

Emergency Management Director Steve Quarles also credited the school district for their cooperation, noting that their efforts helped ensure safe sheltering and consistent meals during the storm’s peak. He thanked Superintendent Foster, staff, and cafeteria workers for their service.

County officials encouraged the community to extend their thanks to the school board, administrators, teachers, support staff, and everyone involved in the shelter operation. They emphasized that partnerships like these strengthen Lafayette County, the statement concluded.
