Lafayette County Sheriff Commends Community and First Responders After Ice Storm

After an 18-day ice storm, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to more than 4,300 calls for service, excluding crimes, according to Sheriff Joey East. The calls included traffic accidents, welfare checks, and transportation assistance. In December 2025, the department handled 1,328 calls during that month, East said.

East praised the dedication of sheriff’s office staff, noting that deputies, jailers, and dispatchers worked long hours with little rest. Some staff members slept on the jail floor after being unable to return home due to the storm, he added. The sheriff’s office personnel cut trees, cleared roads, and checked on residents without seeking recognition or complaint, East said.

The sheriff also commended Lafayette County residents for their efforts in helping neighbors, clearing roads, and offering assistance. He expressed gratitude to North East Mississippi Power Association crews, who worked 12 to 15 hours daily to restore power across the county. The county’s Road Department and Emergency Management team, led by Steve Quarles, also played crucial roles in recovery efforts.

East highlighted the community’s collective response, including providing food, water, and clothing to those in need. He concluded by thanking everyone involved and emphasizing the community’s caring spirit. ‘We are truly blessed to live in Lafayette County,’ he said.
