Mid-South Faces Early Heat Wave and Drought Risks, NOAA Warns

The National Weather Service Memphis and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center are warning residents of an upcoming early heat wave and ongoing drought conditions across the Mid-South. An unseasonably strong high-pressure system is settling over the region, leading to daily highs potentially 10 to 20 degrees above normal, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s to mid-90s, according to NOAA.

The forecast spans April 17 to 23, with officials advising residents to stay hydrated, avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles, and check on elderly neighbors. Outdoor activities should be limited during peak afternoon heat to prevent heat-related illnesses, NOAA said.

The Seasonal Drought Outlook indicates drought conditions are likely to persist or develop across parts of North Mississippi and surrounding areas. The drought, coupled with high temperatures, raises wildfire concerns. Authorities urge caution with outdoor fires and activities that could ignite wildfires.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware and take appropriate safety measures during this period of elevated risk, NOAA added.
