National Weather Service issues fire watch for parts of Mississippi on Sunday

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Fire Weather Watch for areas in Mississippi on Sunday from noon to 7 p.m., citing low relative humidity, gusty winds, and dry fuels, which could lead to rapid fire spread, according to local officials.

Authorities warn that grass fires could ignite easily and spread quickly under these conditions. Lafayette County and the city of Oxford are currently under a burn ban, prohibiting all outdoor fires.

Residents are advised to take precautions, including avoiding open flames or sparks outdoors, keeping vehicles off dry grass, and properly discarding cigarettes. Officials urge anyone who sees smoke or fire to call 911 immediately.
