Oxford Police Drone Unit surveys storm damage to prevent flooding and infrastructure issues

Oxford police Sgt. Peter Heim and Public Information Officer Breck Jones, part of the department’s Drone Unit, partnered with Steve Brunton, the city’s stormwater engineer, to examine areas affected by Winter Storm Fern.

The team flew over city-maintained storm ditches and creeks to identify fallen trees and limbs that could obstruct waterways. Such debris can damage sewage infrastructure, clog drainage systems, and lead to flooding or environmental problems if left unaddressed, officials said.

Using drone technology allowed the team to safely and efficiently survey hard-to-reach areas. The aerial views provided the stormwater division with a clear picture of potential problem spots before issues escalate into costly repairs or community concerns.

This effort highlights how technology and teamwork can help protect Oxford’s infrastructure and ensure the community remains resilient in the aftermath of severe weather, officials added.
