Oxford School District adjusts athletic schedules amid storm recovery

The Oxford School District has announced adjustments to its athletic and activity schedules following recent ice storm damage. With students not expected to return to school until at least Feb. 9, district officials said modifications are necessary for the upcoming week.

Superintendent Bradley Roberson said some schedules are governed by the Mississippi High School Activities Association and other organizations, requiring flexibility from the district. He emphasized that participation in activities remains voluntary and can help provide a sense of normalcy for students.

Starting Monday, Feb. 2, teams and groups may hold open gyms or voluntary practices for students who are in town and able to participate. No practices or activities will occur before that date. Roberson noted that many families are still without heat, power, or water and may need to stay out of town to access essentials. Families unable to attend practices will not face any penalties or impact on participation.

Teams scheduled for away events can still participate as planned beginning Tuesday, regardless of families’ storm-related circumstances. The district plans to host its first home athletic events on Thursday, Feb. 5.

Roberson reiterated that student safety and well-being remain the district’s top priorities. He thanked families for their patience and understanding during this recovery period and encouraged anyone with questions to reach out for clarification.
