Red Flag Warning in Lafayette County Prompts Fire Safety Advisory

The National Weather Service in Memphis issued a Red Flag Warning for Lafayette County and surrounding areas in north Mississippi on Saturday, March 28. The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT.

The warning indicates that critical fire weather conditions are expected, with northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph, relative humidity as low as 20%, and extremely dry fuels such as grass, brush, and leaf litter. These conditions could cause outdoor fires to spread rapidly and become uncontrollable.

The Lafayette County Fire Department strongly advises residents to refrain from any outdoor burning today, including debris piles, brush, and trash. Authorities urge residents not to discard cigarettes outdoors and to be vigilant.

Fire officials recommend clearing dry leaves and brush away from structures, ensuring address visibility for emergency responders, and reporting any smoke or wildfires immediately by calling 911. The fire department is on alert and prepared to respond to any incidents. Community safety remains the top priority.

In case of emergency, residents are urged to call 911 without delay.
