Storm prompts generator safety warnings amid ice accumulation
As ice accumulation increases during the ongoing storm, residents may need to use generators to maintain power, according to local authorities. The Lafayette County Fire Department issued safety tips to prevent accidents and injuries.
The fire department recommends operating generators outdoors only, in well-ventilated areas away from doors, windows, and vents. They also advise ensuring carbon monoxide alarms are functioning properly, as carbon monoxide is an invisible and deadly gas.
Generators should never be used in wet areas or where they can sit in water, to avoid shock or electrocution risks. Only heavy-duty extension cords rated for outdoor use should be used to connect appliances. Additionally, refueling should only be done when the generator is off and cool to prevent fires caused by spilled gasoline igniting on hot engines.
The department urges residents to stay safe and prevent emergencies by following these guidelines. They are available to help in case of emergencies during the storm.
