University in Mississippi remains closed through Sunday amid severe winter storm

The University of Mississippi remains closed through Sunday, Feb. 1, due to severe winter weather, officials announced. All classes and activities have been suspended as emergency crews conduct cleanup and recovery efforts across the campus, according to a university statement.

Safety remains the top priority, with officials warning that road conditions in the region are extremely hazardous. Some roads are shut down due to stranded vehicles and ongoing cleanup operations. The Mississippi Department of Transportation offers resources related to weather and road conditions, the university noted.

Power has been restored to nearly 100% of the campus. However, some off-campus housing and facilities are still experiencing issues, including potential water outages and flooding caused by frozen pipes and heating coils. University facilities teams are actively monitoring and addressing these problems.

Dining services are operational, with Rebel Market open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A team from the United Cajun Navy delivered supplies for 500 servings of chili, which was served today. G&G’s Fry Co. is also open from 2 to 6 p.m., and additional food options are expected to open in campus halls pending delivery.

Governor Tate Reeves signed Executive Order 1593 to activate the Mississippi National Guard to assist with logistics and resource distribution. Guardsmen have arrived in Lafayette County and are coordinating with local emergency agencies. The university has set up a Call Center for non-emergency updates at 662-915-7211, available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Follow @OleMiss on social media for ongoing updates. The Rebel Market has served more than 7,500 people since Sunday, officials said.
