University remains closed through Feb. 1 due to severe weather
The university announced it will remain closed through Sunday, Feb. 1, including all classes and activities, due to severe winter weather. Safety remains the top priority, with roads and walkways hazardous from ice, downed trees, falling ice, and power lines, according to campus officials.
Rebel Drive is closed, and non-essential pedestrian and vehicular traffic on campus is strongly discouraged to allow emergency and recovery crews to work safely. Students not currently on campus or in the local area are advised against returning at this time. Those who must travel are urged to check weather and road conditions carefully, officials said.
Power has been restored to nearly 80% of the campus, with all but one residence hall now powered. Officials expect full restoration by the end of the day. Crews continue working around the clock, coordinating with local utility providers and emergency partners. Power restoration status may fluctuate as work proceeds.
Rebel Market remains open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., providing food services to students and staff. Food is available to anyone on campus, regardless of meal plan. With power restored and staff able to reach campus, menu options are expected to expand.
Housing staff, including resident assistants and community coordinators, are on-site to assist students with guidance and support. Front desks will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., and contact information is available at each location. The university’s police department is available to assist with transportation from off-campus housing to campus when conditions permit, at 662-915-7234.
The Student Union functions as a warming center for students and employees, remaining open with overnight access. Meals are available at Rebel Market, but food is not served in the Union. Service animals are permitted. The university’s bus service remains closed, and updates can be followed on @OUTransit on social media.
All classes and academic activities are canceled through Feb. 1. Faculty will communicate directly with students regarding coursework adjustments. The add/drop deadline remains Monday, Feb. 2, but any changes will be announced. The university encourages everyone to stay updated via @OleMiss.
