Lafayette County burn ban set to expire at midnight Nov. 6
The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors announced that the countywide burn ban would expire at midnight Friday, Nov. 6, according to a notice shared by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
The notice cautioned that the end of the ban did not mean conditions would always be suitable for outdoor burning. Residents planning to burn were advised to check the forecast and avoid burning on windy, dry or low-humidity days.
The announcement recommended keeping burn piles small and away from homes, sheds, fences, trees and power lines. Residents also were advised to clear a wide area around a pile down to bare dirt and keep water and tools nearby, including a charged garden hose, shovel and rake.
Only natural yard debris, such as leaves, limbs and brush, should be burned, according to the notice. Fires should never be left unattended, even briefly.
To extinguish a fire, residents were advised to drown it, stir it and drown it again until it is cold to the touch. The notice said anyone whose fire gets out of control should call 911 immediately.
