Lafayette County sheriff urges drivers to put phones down

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office issued a traffic safety reminder urging drivers to avoid using their phones while driving.

The message, attributed to Sheriff Joey East and the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, warned that texting, checking a notification or glancing at a phone can take a driver's attention from the road. It said distracted driving puts the lives of drivers and others sharing the road at risk, even when the distraction lasts only a few seconds.

The office encouraged drivers to put their phones out of reach and keep their eyes on the road. It also advised drivers never to text while driving and to pull over safely before making a call or sending a message.

The reminder urged motorists to commit to driving distraction-free whenever they get behind the wheel. It concluded with the message: “Arrive alive. Drive focused.”
