Lafayette County sheriff urges safe driving during ballgame weekends

Ballgame weekends bring some of the busiest traffic and highest risks for impaired driving on Lafayette County roads, according to a message from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.

“Every game weekend, our deputies see the same thing: good people making a bad decision to get behind the wheel after drinking,” Sheriff Joey East said. “One phone call for a ride is all it takes to make sure you and everyone else on the road gets home safe.”

The Sheriff’s Office advised people to arrange transportation before heading to a game or tailgate. Options include a designated driver, a rideshare service or a sober friend. The message also warned that even a couple of drinks can slow reaction time and impair judgment, stating there is no “safe” amount to drink before driving.

Drivers were urged to stay alert, buckle up and leave additional following distance because game weekends can mean more impaired drivers on the road. The Sheriff’s Office also said its deputies would conduct extra patrols before, during and after the game.

The agency advised people who see dangerous driving to call 911 and encouraged residents to celebrate safely and make it home to their families.
