Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office shares tips for spotting impersonation scams

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office shared a Halloween-themed scam-prevention message on Facebook warning that scammers may disguise themselves as banks, delivery companies, bosses or family members.

The post described examples including a bank claiming an account is locked, a delivery company reporting a missed package, a boss asking someone to buy gift cards and a family member allegedly needing money quickly.

The office advised residents to slow down because scammers rely on panic and urgency. It said people should not use a phone number or link included in a suspicious message. Instead, they should contact the person or company through a phone number or website they already know is legitimate.

The post also advised against paying someone unknown with gift cards, wire transfers or payment apps such as Zelle or Cash App. It encouraged residents to trust their instincts if something feels wrong and closed with a wish for Lafayette County residents to have a safe and happy Halloween.
