Lafayette County sheriff’s office warns of wind, flooding as remnants of Isaias move through area

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office warned that remnants of Isaias were moving through Lafayette County, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. The office said a wind advisory remained in effect until 8 p.m., with gusts expected to reach 40 to 50 mph.

The sheriff’s office cautioned that tree limbs and power lines could come down. Residents who see a downed power line should stay away and report it to their power company, according to the notice. Loose items, including patio furniture and trash cans, should be brought inside or secured.

A flood watch was posted through 7 a.m. Sunday. About 1 inch of rain was expected in Oxford, with the heaviest rainfall forecast from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Low spots and ditches could flood quickly, and the sheriff’s office advised drivers to turn around if water covered a road.

The notice said rain and wind were expected to ease in the evening. Sunday was forecast to be sunny, with a high near 84 degrees. Residents traveling Sunday were advised to watch for limbs and debris on roads and to ensure Wireless Emergency Alerts were enabled on their phones.
