Authorities Warn of Scam Targeting Families of Incarcerated Individuals

Law enforcement officials have issued a warning about recent scams targeting the families of incarcerated individuals. Reports indicate that victims have been contacted with false claims related to their loved ones’ release, involving requests for payments.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office and its employees confirmed they will never call and ask for money over the phone or through digital payment methods such as PayPal, Venmo, or Bitcoin. Officials advise the public to be cautious and to verify any suspicious communications.

If someone believes they have fallen victim to such a scam, authorities recommend filing a report with the sheriff’s office and the Department of Justice within 72 hours of sending funds. Additional information is available at https://www.ic3.gov.
