Campus Remains Closed as Cleanup Continues After Incident

Campus safety officials said the university is on track to resume normal operations Monday, Feb. 9, following a week of response and recovery efforts. Director of Campus Safety and Chief of Police Daniel Sanford emphasized that safety remains the top priority.

Sanford noted that the campus remains closed through Sunday, Feb. 8, except to first responders and essential workers. The closure affects campus offices, but some individuals may still be on campus for warming shelters, food, showers, and housing. He urged everyone to avoid non-essential visits to help maintain safety.

Debris removal across the campus has been a massive effort involving hundreds of crew members and heavy equipment. Sanford said the work is challenging under normal conditions, and current circumstances make it even more difficult. Roadways and walkways must stay clear of vehicles and pedestrians to ensure safety and efficiency.

Several road closures are in place, including Grove Loop and the Circle, with additional closures expected as cleanup continues. The South Campus Rail Trails also remain closed. Sanford asked the campus community to respect barricades and follow law enforcement directions.

He expressed appreciation for the community’s cooperation in adhering to safety protocols. Sanford said that staying off campus for non-essential reasons and complying with closures will help crews complete their work quickly and safely, supporting the goal of a swift return to normal campus operations.
