Free Narcan training set for Oct. 1 in Oxford

The Oxford Police Department, Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, Ole Miss Police and Communicare MS will host a free community Narcan training from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at the OPD Training Room, 9 Industrial Park Drive, according to a post from the Oxford Police Department.

Narcan will be provided to all attendees. Organizers said the training is intended to give community members an opportunity to support one another and learn a potentially lifesaving skill. No registration is required, and everyone is welcome.

The announcement came after the department said the community had been affected by the tragic loss of two students during the week. The department expressed support for the students' families, friends, classmates and others who were grieving.

The law enforcement agencies said the training does not change their commitment to holding people accountable for possession or distribution of illegal narcotics. Their message urged people not to use drugs and said illicit narcotics can be deadly. The agencies also said accountability and enforcement would remain central to their efforts against the epidemic.
