Lafayette County and Oxford under severe weather alert with risks of damaging winds and hail

Lafayette County and the city of Oxford are under a Level 2 risk for severe weather on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 2 p.m., with storms expected to move eastward across the region.

Forecasters warn of damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail up to quarter size, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of tornadoes. The area could receive 1 to 2 inches of rain, leading to localized flooding concerns, especially during thunderstorms.

Residents are urged to stay weather aware throughout the day. Authorities recommend multiple warning alerts on phones and trusted weather sources. Outdoor warning sirens should not be relied upon solely for alerts.

Lafayette County Emergency Management advised residents to secure outdoor items, avoid trees and power lines during storms, and seek shelter indoors during tornado warnings. Drivers are warned not to attempt to cross flooded roads, and people should seek indoor safety at the first sign of thunderstorms.

Officials will continue monitoring conditions and will provide updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued.
