Lafayette County issues ice storm warning ahead of weekend

The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning for Lafayette County, effective from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Sunday. The warning warns of significant ice accumulation of a half-inch to an inch and potential snow and sleet totaling 1 to 3 inches.

Officials warn that the storm could cause tree damage and power outages that may last more than a day. Travel is expected to become hazardous, especially beginning Friday evening.

Residents are advised to avoid travel if possible once conditions worsen. Those who must travel should plan for delays, keep a winter safety kit in their vehicles, and check road conditions by dialing 511. Authorities recommend charging phones and batteries, stocking up on food and water for at least three days, and refilling critical medications in advance.

Preparation tips include insulating exposed pipes, planning for cold weather with layered clothing and blankets, and ensuring vehicles and generators are fueled and ready. Officials also remind residents never to run generators indoors or in garages to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Lafayette County Emergency Management Agency will continue to provide updates as the storm approaches.
