Lafayette County man arrested on felony assault charge involving elderly victim
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Taylor man in connection with the assault of an elderly victim.
On July 11, deputies responded to Baptist Memorial Hospital after the report of an assault at a residence on County Road 303 in the Taylor community, according to officials. The victim was at least 65 years old.
Investigators identified 41-year-old Anthony Carothers as the suspect. A warrant was issued charging him with simple assault on a person at least 65 years of age, a felony under Mississippi law. Later that day, deputies took Carothers into custody at his home without incident.
Carothers appeared before the Lafayette County Justice Court, where his bond was set at $10,000. He remains at the Lafayette County Detention Center, pending bond posting. He is also held on a detainer for the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
The sheriff’s office thanked the Oxford Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit for its assistance. Authorities emphasized that charges are allegations and that Carothers is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
