Lafayette County Sheriff Thanks Community and Responders After Devastating Ice Storm

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to more than 4,300 calls for service over the past 18 days, sheriff Joey East said in a message to the community. The calls included traffic accidents, welfare checks, and transportation assistance, but did not account for crimes. In comparison, the department handled 1,328 calls in December 2025, East noted.

East praised the dedication of sheriff’s office personnel, including jailers, dispatchers, and deputies, many of whom worked long hours with little rest. Some staff members slept on the jail floor after being unable to return home due to the storm, which knocked out heat and water in their residences.

He commended staff for cutting trees, opening roads, and checking on residents without seeking recognition or complaint. East highlighted the community’s response as well, with residents helping to clear roads, check on neighbors, and provide aid throughout the crisis.

East also expressed gratitude to North East Mississippi Power Association crews, who worked 12 to 15 hours daily to restore power. He praised the County Road Department for their efforts in clearing roads and restoring travel and utilities. The sheriff credited the Emergency Management team, led by Steve Quarles, for their outstanding work in caring for the community during this period.

He concluded by emphasizing the community’s spirit of cooperation and compassion, stating, “We are truly blessed to live in Lafayette County and witness so many people working together to care for one another.”
