Mississippi authorities investigate hit-and-run involving Lafayette County school bus
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a hit-and-run crash involving a Lafayette County School District bus on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred on Highway 334 around 3:32 p.m., according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. A passenger vehicle collided with the bus and then fled the scene before deputies arrived.
No injuries were reported, and emergency responders, including the Lafayette County Fire Department, Lafayette County Emergency Management Agency, and Baptist Ambulance Service, responded to the scene. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is leading the investigation with assistance from the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Joey East said investigators have identified a person of interest but have not released a name. He emphasized the county’s zero-tolerance policy for incidents that jeopardize student safety.
“Leaving the scene of a crash involving a school bus was a very poor decision, and we will work alongside the Mississippi Highway Patrol to make sure whoever is responsible is held fully accountable,” East said. The sheriff’s office will not release additional information at this time. Media inquiries should be directed to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Troop E.
