Mississippi Department of Public Safety announces new leadership team
Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell announced new leadership appointments Thursday, including James Herzog as deputy commissioner and director of the Mississippi State Bureau of Investigation.
Herzog, who has served as lieutenant colonel of the bureau since 2024, brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Under the provisions of House Bill 1612, he will oversee the bureau, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, the Office of Homeland Security, and the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory. Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Colonel Phillip Pope will serve as deputy director.
Joshua Bromen has been named director of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Division. Bromen previously served as director of the Office of Public Safety and Planning and has extensive experience in law enforcement leadership, training, and public safety. The new structure created by House Bill 1612 assigns MLED to oversee the Office of Public Safety and Planning, the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers’ Training Academy, the Driver Service Bureau, and the Office of Standards and Training.
Jim Brinson will serve as director of the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security. Brinson, who previously served as interim director and deputy director of the office, is a U.S. Air Force veteran with experience in homeland security, emergency preparedness, active shooter response, terrorism prevention, and public safety training initiatives. He is committed to strengthening partnerships and advancing training efforts statewide.
Governor Tate Reeves praised the appointments, emphasizing the importance of leadership in maintaining public safety. “Keeping Mississippians safe is a top priority, and strong, experienced leadership is essential to that mission,” Reeves said. Commissioner Tindell also expressed confidence in the new appointees, highlighting their dedication and professionalism in serving the state.
