NE Mississippi Electric offers safety tips for generator use during winter storms

North East Mississippi Electric Power Association has issued safety tips for residents planning to use generators during winter storms. The utility urges caution to prevent accidents and ensure safety.

The association emphasizes never using a generator indoors, as carbon monoxide poisoning poses a serious risk. They also recommend shutting off the main breaker before connecting a generator to protect family, first responders, and utility workers.

For whole-house generators, the utility advises hiring a licensed electrician for installation, scheduling regular tests, and understanding the system’s limits. Creating a priority plan for essential appliances during outages is also recommended. DIY installation is discouraged due to safety risks.

When using portable generators, residents should operate them outdoors with at least 20 feet of clearance from doors, windows, or vents. Fuel should be stored properly in designated containers away from living areas, and refueling should only occur when the unit is off and cool. Regular testing and replacing frayed cords are also advised to maintain safety and prevent electrical hazards.
