One Dead in Lafayette County House Fire, Authorities Say

LAKE LAFAYETTE, Miss. — A house fire on County Road 369 in Lafayette County claimed the life of a 35-year-old woman early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 4:30 a.m. after Lafayette County E-911 received a call about a house fire with a possible person trapped inside, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. Multiple agencies, including the Lafayette County Fire Department, Oxford Fire Department, Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Baptist Ambulance Service, responded to the scene.

Despite efforts to rescue her, the victim, identified as Monique Crashon Gardner, was found dead inside the home. The circumstances surrounding the fire and her death are under investigation, led by the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office in coordination with local investigators.

Officials said there is no evidence of foul play at this time, but the investigation remains ongoing. No additional details about the incident have been released.

Sheriff Joey East expressed condolences, stating, “There are no words that can adequately express the heartbreak that comes with losing a loved one in such a tragic way. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family as they face this unimaginable loss.
