One Dead in Lafayette County House Fire, Investigation Underway

LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Miss. — A house fire on County Road 369 in Lafayette County claimed the life of a woman early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., Lafayette County E-911 received a call reporting the fire and a possible person trapped inside. Multiple agencies responded, including the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Lafayette County Fire Department, Oxford Fire Department, the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Baptist Ambulance Service.

Emergency personnel found 35-year-old Monique Crashon Gardner deceased inside the home. The cause of the fire and the circumstances of her death are under investigation, led by the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office in collaboration with local authorities.

Officials stated there does not appear to be any foul play at this time. No additional details about the incident are being released.

Sheriff Joey East expressed condolences, saying, “There are no words that can adequately express the heartbreak that comes with losing a loved one in such a tragic way. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family as they face this unimaginable loss. I ask our community to come together and surround them with prayer, compassion, and support during this difficult time.”
