One Dead, One Critically Injured in Lafayette County Car Crash

LAFAAYETTE, Miss. — A crash on County Road 103 resulted in the death of one person and critically injured another, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

Deputies responded to the scene around 4:07 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a 911 call about the collision near the intersection with County Road 104. They found a vehicle on the east side of the road that had caught fire.

Emergency crews, including the Lafayette County Fire Department and Baptist EMS, arrived to provide medical aid. The driver, Chloe Johnson, 19, of Abbeville, Mississippi, was pronounced dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Glenn Coleman. The passenger, Zoe Johnson, 19, also of Abbeville, was transported by helicopter to Region One Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. She remains in critical but stable condition, authorities said.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the crash. Authorities said it involved only one vehicle, and no foul play is suspected.

Sheriff Joey East expressed condolences to the families, saying the community is heartbroken by the loss of Johnson. “A life filled with promise was taken far too soon,” he said. East urged residents to prioritize safety and keep the Johnson family in their thoughts and prayers as the investigation continues.

The sheriff’s office said additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available, and the investigation remains ongoing.
