Oxford police investigate suspected overdose involving 22-year-old on Sweetgum Lane
The Oxford Police Department responded to a suspected overdose involving a 22-year-old person at a residence on Sweetgum Lane, according to a department post. Officers responded around 5 a.m. Oct. 1 after the person was found unresponsive.
Emergency medical personnel revived the person, who was alert and oriented when transported by ambulance for further medical care. The department said the person was expected to be OK.
The department said the person is not a student and that the incident was not student-related. During the investigation, officers learned the person had synthetic kratom products in their possession. Based on statements provided to investigators, police said there was no current indication the products were purchased in the Oxford area.
The Oxford Police Department and the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The department said the incident was not connected to recent death investigations in the community.
Police warned that synthetic and manufactured kratom products can contain powerful and unpredictable substances and urged anyone experiencing or witnessing a suspected overdose to call 911 immediately. The department also credited emergency medical personnel with providing immediate care and helping ensure the person received medical attention.
