Oxford School District Announces Adjustments to Sports and Activities Amid Ice Storm Recovery

The Oxford School District has announced modifications to its athletic and activity schedules as it responds to the aftermath of a recent ice storm. Superintendent Bradley Roberson said in a letter to families that students will not return to school before Feb. 9, prompting the district to adjust upcoming plans.

Roberson emphasized that some athletic schedules are governed by the Mississippi High School Activities Association and other state organizations, which may impact planning. The district encourages flexibility from families, noting that participation in activities is voluntary and can provide a sense of normalcy for students.

Beginning Feb. 2, teams and groups may hold open gyms or voluntary practices for students in town and whose families are comfortable with local travel. No practices or activities are scheduled before that date. The district acknowledged that many families are still without heat, power, or water and may need to stay out of town to meet basic needs.

Roberson said that students unable to attend practices or events due to storm-related issues will not face any penalties or impact on participation. Teams scheduled for away events may still participate as planned, even if families remain out of town.

The district plans to host its first home athletic events on Feb. 5, prioritizing safety and well-being. Roberson thanked families for their patience and understanding as the district continues its recovery efforts and encouraged anyone with questions to reach out for clarification.
