Scammers Using Text Messages to Target Drivers About Unpaid Traffic Citations

Scammers are sending text messages to residents claiming they have unpaid traffic citations. The messages often threaten arrest warrants or legal action.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies do not contact individuals by phone regarding unpaid tickets or warrants. Authorities warn residents to ignore these messages and avoid clicking any links or making payments.

If residents are unsure whether a message is legitimate, they should contact the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department at 662-234-6421. Officials emphasize that no law enforcement agency will initiate contact in this manner to collect fines or resolve citations.
