University of Mississippi Extends Campus Closure Amid Severe Ice Storm

The University of Mississippi announced that its Oxford campus will remain closed through Sunday, Feb. 1, due to severe winter weather and ongoing recovery efforts. The closure includes the cancellation of events and activities, with the university monitoring conditions and planning further updates.

The university has experienced significant storm-related impacts, including downed trees, power outages, and hazardous road conditions. University officials urge students not on campus or in the local area to avoid returning at this time to allow first responders and campus teams to carry out recovery work. Students who choose to travel should check weather and road conditions before heading to campus.

Power has been restored to many residence halls, and crews continue working with local utility providers to bring power back to remaining areas. For updates on individual buildings, students can call the university’s Call Center at 662-915-7211 during business hours.

Support services for students remain available. The GFC Student Union is serving as a warming shelter with overnight access, though it cannot provide food at this time. Students are advised to bring essentials, including snacks. The Rebel Market remains open to serve all students, regardless of meal plan status, as dining teams work to support the campus community.
