Mississippi Cyber Unit urges automatic updates, backups during Cybersecurity Awareness Month
The Mississippi Cyber Unit is urging people to update their devices and back up important files as part of its final Cyber Tip of the Week for Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The advice was shared in a Facebook post from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
The unit said keeping devices updated and important files backed up can help protect against cybercriminals, ransomware and unexpected data loss. It recommended turning on automatic updates for phones, computers, applications and other connected devices so they receive the latest security patches.
The advisory also promoted the 3-2-1 Backup Rule: Keep three copies of important files, use two different types of storage and store one secure copy off-site or in the cloud. It also recommended automating backups rather than waiting until something goes wrong.
The Mississippi Cyber Unit encouraged people to stay alert, stay informed and stay cyber safe throughout the year.
