Lafayette County issues severe weather alert for Oxford area

Lafayette County Emergency Management Agency issued a severe weather alert Monday for Oxford and surrounding areas. The Storm Prediction Center placed the region under a slight risk level for severe thunderstorms.

The primary threat is damaging straight-line winds, with a 30% to 44% chance of severe gusts within 25 miles. Winds could exceed 58 mph, potentially causing tree damage, power outages, and hazardous driving conditions, according to the agency.

Large hail also poses a significant risk, with similar probability levels. Hail could damage vehicles, roofs, and other property. A tornado threat exists as well, with a 5% to 9% probability, primarily further north but still a concern for residents in Oxford.

Officials recommend residents have multiple ways to receive warnings, including Wireless Emergency Alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, and trusted weather apps. They advise identifying a safe room, securing outdoor items, and charging electronic devices before storms arrive. People are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and seek shelter early if storms approach.

Lafayette County EMA will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates throughout the day, authorities said.
