Oxford wastewater plant undergoes valve and piping replacement
The City of Oxford said utility crews and M&N are replacing two 24-inch valves and associated piping at the city’s primary wastewater treatment plant on Highway 7 South.
The valves became partially blocked over their 20-year lifespan, according to a post on the City of Oxford’s Facebook page. The work shuts down the plant’s clarifying tanks, and crews are working to return the system to service.
The facility processes up to 3.5 million gallons of municipal wastewater daily. The city said the plant recently underwent upgrades that included modernized aeration piping and advanced electronic monitoring systems.
The city also said food for the live bacteria and other organisms that naturally break down waste will be delivered to the tanks so they do not starve while the system is down.
The wastewater plant is maintained by utility crews who perform the work behind the scenes, the city said.
