Lady Chargers tames Lewisburg; Soccer scores from Tuesday

OLIVE BRANCH – The Oxford Lady Chargers led wire-to-wire on the road Tuesday night in their 67-46 win over the Lewisburg Lady Patriots.

Oxford (4-5 overall) jumped out to an early 8-1 lead and was never seriously threatened throughout the contest against Lewisburg (3-4). The Lady Chargers were able to stay in front thanks to their defense forcing 23 of the 30 turnovers the Lady Patriots had. Oxford led 18-8 after the first quarter and led 34-17 at halftime.

“We’re challenging them to not gamble as much as far as taking two people to create steals,” Oxford coach Cliff Ormon said. “Stay between your man and the ball. Let your teammate get the reward, but you did all the work. It’s not always fun, but I thought they did a better job of that. It’s effort. If you’re a good defensive team, you’re going to play with good effort and I thought I saw that (Tuesday). With effort, I really can’t get on (to them) if you’re giving us all you got.”

Keyunna Tellis did it all for Oxford finishing with an unusual double-double with game-highs of 19 points and 11 steals, a stat category not usually in double figures. She also added a game-high six assists.

“I thought she played really well,” Ormon said of Tellis. “I like to look at her turnovers. She handles the ball for us a lot. No doubt she’s a playmaker. She’s starting to shoot the ball well and become more confident in herself and what we’re looking for her to do. It’s good to see in her being rewarded because she works hard and plays hard.”

Audria Houston added 18 points. Miracle Joiner tacked on 13 points and nine rebounds to round out the double-figure scoring. Lewisburg was led with the more traditional double-double performance from Allie Carrol with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Reagan Salter also had a double-figure game with 10 points and added seven rebounds.
